I am really fucking tired of people calling Imogen a sad boi. She’s not a sad boi for the SAME REASON that Caleb and Vax (and Percy, etc.) are also not sad bois.

They CANNOT be a sad boi if they have actual trauma. Trauma automatically disqualifies from sad boi hours. Sad bois are melodramatically sad for no reason. Stop calling them sad bois! It’s annoying!

Also, a character with a little angst to their story fills out the emotional palate of the party the same way that something acidic like vinegar or lime juice brings out the flavour profile of a meal. People who are complaining that Imogen’s story being one that might deal with *gasp* uncomfortable emotions and mature themes feel like they’ve confused the cliche of the edgy sadboi with the notion that a character might not be a quipping marvel hero badass all the time.

Likewise, Jester was sugary on SO many levels is it any wonder Laura wants to play someone to contrast that?

The Choir is annoying as fuck. “The Sky and the Cosmos are one.” Oh my god, holy shit, thank you for that keen insight, it only took you a generation to realize the mindboggling truth, while Byrgenworth already had working solar system models.

This is what happens when you raise a bunch of orphans on a diet of dungeon goo and mercury

What’s hilarious about the choir is not only did someone in the church think: “hey, lets get a bunch of orphans and try to raise them to have the most fucked up brains possible”

But also:“Lets immediately put them in charge”

Its the perfect nexus of weird victorian eugenics and fucked up religious sophistry, this idea that they’d just build better leaders from scratch and get it right on the first try.

I want supplemental bloodborne lore that shows the choir as what amounts to an overgrown gaggle of kidnergardeners who can rattle off obscure theological concepts all day but have no idea how to bathe or use a knife and fork on their own because they had this whole hierarchy of devout servants to do literally everything for them.

What’s the game design reason behind Barbarian rages being limited? Why should barbarians be useless in combat after a certain amount of combats?

A lot of people pointing out that wizards run out of spell slots, but that’s not comparable. A huge part of playing any spellcaster is deciding whether to cast a cantrip or expend resources for a higher level spell. Once they have run out of spell slots, they still have cantrips that make them feel special.

Meanwhile, Barbarians have the option to rage at the start of combat or to not rage. The decision boils down to “Do I think that we are going to have 2/¾/5/6 other combats today that will be more dangerous?” And if they’re not raging, they don’t do cantrips instead, they just do the exact same thing as if they were raging except weaker.

Someone also pointed out that if Barbarians didn’t have to expend a resource to be at their best but others did, that would be unfair. All I can say to that is Rogues.

But rogues have to have a requirement to be at their best, they must have advantage on their attack or be stealthier, and if your DM doesn’t use linking or says that thinking can be used for sneak attack then that’s a lot harder.

Oh yeah Rogues don’t have to expend any resources to be at their best but there is still some requirements for it.

Maybe Barbarians could start raging once they take damage. Would that be fun?

I don’t know I never played a barbarian for more than like 3 sessions in a row, the only reason i’m thinking about them rn is because I’m playing one in BG3 rn and you have a lot more encounters per day in that game than in your average dnd game.

A barbarian’s standard attacks are their cantrips. A 20 strength barb at 5th level gets a +8 to their melee attacks and a +5 to damage. Combine that with high damage roll weapons, extra attack, and reckless for advantage on every attack, and you get something that looks cantrip-ish, with unlimited uses and reliable damage-dealing. And they have high hit points so they can keep taking the hits even without the rage damage resistance. Barb rage is an important mechanic but there’s a lot of muscle and hardiness underneath when those uses run out.

How’s this for a solution? There are cool things the barbarian can do in order to REGAIN rages per day, specifically stuff that encourages the “go big or go home” gameplay the class is supposed to represent.

Just off the top of my head:

  • Getting a crit
  • Being crit
  • Succeeding at an athletics check with a dc over 20

Then there’s a few ideas that feel right but would need balancing

  • Getting drunk
  • Breaking shit
  • Disrespecting authority
  • Doing stupid shit like touching the obviously cursed sword
  • Vengence

“Where does your strength come from” is such a good character beat for barbarians, I’d even say it would be a fun alternate class feature to ask a player what fuels their character’s anger the way a paladin’s oath fuels their righteousness.

6000 FOLLOWERS 🎉

I can’t believe it we did it folks! Only a couple years of posting my ramblings online and now all of a sudden there’s an actual audience gathered around me. The artist in me is alternatively honored and reduced to tears thinking about how far I’ve come as a creator. Thanks to every single one of you, and here’s to the many more adventures we’ll be going on soon.

As a treat for you ( and further motivation for myself) here’s the very first draft of the long awaited first episode of my podcast. Coming soon to a set of headphones near you.  Please let me know what you think, by which I mean heap flattery upon me and look forward to future episodes ( and cover art) coming out in the near future as I think I’ve found a way to make this work.

I love that Matt is the one on Twitter who was going “Travis is a troll”, but also Matt allowed Travis to reflavor a shield into a mallet, and the lack of a visible shield absolutely helped sell the “he is DEFINITELY a rogue, you guys” a little. Matt is also a troll and clearly enjoyed helping pull that off QUITE a lot.

It also tripped me up when Chetney wanted to do two weapon fighting and Matt said “you need a feat for that”

I thought Matt’d gotten the rules wrong (like we all do sometimes) but nah, all part of the master plan

I’m trying to explain conservative conspiracy theorists aversion to transhumanism but I can’t seem to find the root of the idea. It’s been floating around in the occult milieu for a while but it’s one of those ideas that I’ve never been able to track down.

I *think* it’s Christian in origin, but that doesn’t necessarily explain the underlying fear. My best guess is that it’s a spiritualized/politicized fear of some greater entity having control over your body, a la pharmaceutical companies controlling insulin applies.

Actually addressing that would require some form of explicit anti-capitalism, and I think that maybe the fear of bodily control combined with older occult theories about the body and disease. In the vein of “eating unhealthy is a disruption of gods plan for the body” you get “transhuman modifications of the body are a disruption of the natural order of the body” and add in some satanic-panic era “all of the problems with capitalism are the result of a Shadowy group of satanists.”

Maybe in the vein of “allowing marital autonomy will allow people to exist outside structures traditionally dominated by god” it’s “allowing bodily autonomy gives people options that are not Christianity”

I think its very telling that when demagogs like Alex Jones go on rants about transhumanism , he frequently couples it with “transgender ideology” as if they were interchangeable, and that people wanting to shift their pronouns around was just the start of us getting cyborgs and gene therapy.

If we want to get right down to it though, I think we can drill down on the “made in the image of god” line that always gets brought up in opposition to say, tattoos or women cutting their hair short. There’s an idealized conservative way that bodies are supposed to look, and if you step out if that willingly or otherwise you become less godly. Anything straying too far from that ideal enters a sort of conservative uncanny valley, where reactions quickly go from derision to fear of the other.

The conspira-sphere also seems to have an underlying fear that these changes will be foisted on them, like how the new world order is performing eugenics through birth control, or the vaccine is going to alter your DNA so god can’t barcode scan you into heaven. For them, transhumanism seems to be a direct threat to their agency and liberty, rather than a means of breaking free of biological limits.

Actually, there’s an avenue to explore: how transhumanism subverts white supremicy by allowing individuals to flout the biological/divine hierarchy that they always put themselves at the top of.
